Day 17 - Hanksville to Lake Powell

The ride from Hanksville to Lake Powell was only 51 miles, so we planned for an easy day. This is dawn over our motel, just before we walked to the cafe for the "Hanksville Special": two eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, biscuits and gravy.
Much of Utah is "open range", which means no fences and cattle on the road. I brake for cows. As a result of this system, there are MANY cattle guards. They are wonderful for keeping a cyclist alert. Our big debate is whether it is more dangerous to walk over them, or ride. I ride; the sensation is "massage chair gone mad."

Bill's pills. Just Tylenol. He got them because they compliment his outfit.
John Wesley Powell and friends arrive at the Colorado River, only to find we have dammed it up and stuck his name on it to complete the insult.
The 1965 bridge over the Colorado is beautiful. This is the point at which river becomes lake.
David's self-portrait of his shoulder. A case of gravel in the roadway at a turn. The photo of his hip will be on the adult access page.

What is not shown here is the incredibly beautiful North Wash. As we got near the Colorado we approached through the canyon of a small tributary called the North Wash. This began as a fairly typical broader canyon, and then narrowed unexpectedly. There was the river, the high red-brown canyon walls, the road, and us. It was quite beautiful, and we rode in silence for several miles.
