Cedar Breaks

We are in Panguitch, Utah tonight, on US 89 west of Bryce Canyon, which we will visit tomorrow. We have had a happy and successful day. What a diference in our surroundings. We have gone from emptiness to the narrow Cedar Canyon; from almost no traffic to heavy, fast traffic. The majority of vehicles were for construction, hauling something, or just very big. From no water to much, althiugh the region is in a multi-year drought. We actually followed two streams for several miles. From Cedar City we started climbing immediately up Cedar Canyon to Cedar Breaks, pictured above. It is a vast canyon formed by erosion a the edge of a fault line. The area is uplifted 5000 feet from Cedar City on the other side of the fault and then eroded to expose brilliant colors and dramatic spires, ridges, cliffs and canyons. We got to climb almost 5000 feet, which took us all morning, and peaked at over 10,600 which is higher than any of us have ridden a bike before. We lingered to walk to a grove of bristlecone pines and to visit overlooks of the breaks.

Before we left the park it turned cold and a light rain began. We have transitioned overnight from desert heat to cold and rain. We all got to make use of the rain gear we have been hauling for 12 days, and the weather was a good excuse to stop for a burger on the cruise down the mountain.

We have decided to allow more time for visiting the parks the next few days, so we stopped short of our planned finish tonight and will probably take one more day than planned to reach Dolores, Colorado.
